Taliban Ambush, One Man Changes Everything

A U.S. Army officer who charged into Taliban fighters to save an unconscious comrade — and then kept fighting — has finally received the nation’s highest military honor, more than a decade after the battle.

Story Highlights

  • President Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to Major Nicholas Dockery at a White House ceremony on June 18, 2026.
  • Dockery led his platoon against roughly 150 Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan on October 2, 2012, rescuing wounded soldiers and directing air support under heavy fire.
  • Congress passed the Nicholas Dockery Medal of Honor Act unanimously to authorize the award, recognizing that the normal process required special legislation.
  • Dockery is one of only two U.S. officers to earn two Silver Stars in the post-9/11 era, and later went on to serve as a Green Beret.

A Soldier’s Finest Hour in Kapisa Province

On October 2, 2012, then-Second Lieutenant Nicholas Dockery was leading a combined force of American and Afghan soldiers in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, when Taliban fighters ambushed his platoon. The enemy force was armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and small arms. Dockery moved through open ground under fire to rally his men, reinforce isolated positions, and strengthen the defense as the attack intensified.

When Taliban fighters began dragging away an unconscious American soldier, Dockery charged them, killed both enemy combatants, and pulled his teammate to safety. He then administered lifesaving aid to the wounded soldier. After that, Dockery climbed to a rooftop — still under fire — and fired smoke grenades to mark his position for friendly helicopter gunships so they could suppress the remaining enemy. He was the last man to leave the battlefield. [1]

Congress Acted to Make the Award Possible

Dockery originally received the Silver Star for his actions that day — the military’s third-highest valor award. [2] Because the normal Medal of Honor nomination window had passed, Congress had to step in. Representative Jim Baird introduced the Nicholas Dockery Medal of Honor Act, and the House passed it unanimously. [2] Representative Victoria Spartz also championed the bill, identified as H.R. 7194, through the chamber. [3] The legislation gave President Trump the authority to present the award directly.

Baird called Dockery’s conduct “extraordinary heroism, going above and beyond the call of duty.” The congressman noted that Dockery is the sole Army officer — and one of only two U.S. officers — to earn two Silver Stars for gallantry in the post-9/11 era. [2] That record alone speaks to a career defined by repeated courage under fire, not a single standout moment.

Trump Places the Medal Around a Hero’s Neck

President Trump hosted the Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House on June 18, 2026. Dockery was one of three veterans honored that day. [4] The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest military decoration. By law, it goes only to service members who show “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.” The review process alone typically takes more than 18 months and moves through multiple levels of military and civilian approval before reaching the president. [13]

After his 2012 deployment, Dockery continued serving. He earned the Green Beret and led Special Forces teams in some of the military’s most demanding assignments. [8] He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2011 and commissioned as an Infantry officer. [11] His story is a reminder that the men and women who defend this country often carry their service long after the firefight ends — and that real heroism rarely looks for recognition.
