An Ohio surgeon who climbed on top of his sleeping girlfriend and forced crushed abortion pills into her mouth, killing their unborn child, faces a maximum of just five years in prison after accepting a plea deal that dismisses the most serious charges against him.
The Attack
Hassan-James Abbas allegedly carried out the assault at his Toledo home in 2024 after his girlfriend, who was also his patient, told him she was pregnant and refused his repeated demands to get an abortion. Prosecutors say Abbas secretly used his estranged wife’s personal information to order mifepristone and misoprostol pills online. In the days before the attack, he offered his girlfriend hot chocolate and tea, gestures reportedly inconsistent with their relationship. While she slept, Abbas climbed on top of her, held her down, crushed the abortion drugs into powder, and shoved them into her mouth.

Charges Dismissed
The woman woke during the assault, fought back, and tried to call 911, but Abbas grabbed the phone and ended the call. She eventually escaped and sought emergency medical treatment, but the unborn child did not survive. A Lucas County grand jury indicted Abbas in 2025 on six felony charges, including abduction and tampering with evidence. Earlier this month, Abbas entered a no-contest plea to four charges. The abduction and tampering charges will be dismissed at sentencing.
Criticism and Accountability
Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia Bates acknowledged the plea deal represents a serious abuse of trust by a medical professional. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, criticized the case as another example of the unregulated abortion pill industry enabling abusers. Hawkins argued that without accountability in the chemical abortion industry, pill vendors and abortion businesses will continue to operate without oversight while mothers and babies suffer the consequences. Sentencing is scheduled for June, with Abbas facing up to five years in prison and fines totaling fifteen thousand dollars.
