Sheriff ARRESTED Over Massive Jailbreak Case

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson faces 30 felony charges including malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice following last year’s brazen escape of 10 dangerous inmates from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility. The indictment comes nearly a year after convicted murderers and violent offenders broke through a hidden hole behind a toilet, sparking a massive manhunt that gripped New Orleans.

The Escape That Shocked Louisiana

Ten inmates executed their escape plan in May of last year, slipping through a deliberate breach in the jail wall. Investigators discovered bolts had been removed from the outside of the facility, raising immediate questions about inside assistance. Security footage captured the convicted criminals attempting to force open a door before disappearing through the concealed opening. Among those who fled were individuals charged with murder and other serious violent crimes, putting the community at immediate risk.

The escapees included Antoine Massey, Lenton Venburen, Leo Tate, Kendell Myles, Derrick Groves, Jermaine Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Keith Lewis. Law enforcement launched an intensive search operation, eventually recapturing all ten fugitives. Authorities subsequently charged 13 individuals with assisting the escape, both from inside the facility and after the inmates reached the streets.

Sheriff And CFO Face Serious Charges

A special grand jury handed down sweeping indictments against Sheriff Hutson and Chief Financial Officer Bianka Brown. Hutson faces 30 felony counts while Brown confronts 20 similar charges. The indictments include accusations of malfeasance in office, filing or maintaining false public records, and obstruction of justice. The attorney general’s office released details of the charges, signaling prosecutors believe jail leadership actively worked to conceal information or misrepresent facts related to the security failure.

Questions Mount Over Jail Security

The arrests raise fundamental questions about oversight and accountability at the Orleans Parish correctional system. How did dangerous inmates gain access to tools capable of removing exterior bolts? Why were security protocols inadequate to detect the planning of such an elaborate escape? The allegations against the sheriff and CFO suggest systemic failures extended beyond simple negligence to potential criminal conduct. Residents demand answers about whether leadership prioritized political considerations over public safety, allowing conditions that enabled violent offenders to walk free into their neighborhoods.
