First Lady Melania Trump publicly demanded ABC television take action against late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after he made assassination jokes about her husband President Donald Trump during a mock comedy speech—just days before an actual assassination attempt occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
The Joke That Crossed The Line
During Thursday’s broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live, the comedian delivered a fake White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech where he referred to Melania Trump as having “a glow like an expectant widow.” The comment came just days before a 31-year-old teacher attempted to assassinate President Trump at the actual Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday in Washington, D.C. Kimmel also targeted Trump’s children and senior officials with inflammatory remarks.
Hey @jimmykimmel, what is funny about this?
Joking is one thing, but wishing death on the President by telling Melania “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow”?
That’s not comedy, that’s dangerous rhetoric.
We’re better than this.

The First Lady was seated beside President Trump when gunshots erupted at the Washington Hilton ballroom. A viral image captured the moment of fear on her face as she realized what was happening. Kimmel’s monologue also included calling Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who is Jewish, “Baby Hitler” while labeling him a “racist” and “white supremacist.”
First Lady Issues Direct Challenge To ABC
Melania Trump released a forceful statement condemning both Kimmel and ABC for enabling his rhetoric. “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy—his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America,” she wrote. The First Lady accused Kimmel of being “a coward” who “hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.”
History Of Controversy And Suspension
This marks the second time ABC has faced pressure over Kimmel’s inflammatory comments. The network suspended him for several days last September after he falsely blamed Trump supporters for the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Kimmel has maintained a years-long public feud with President Trump, using his platform to launch repeated attacks against the administration. The First Lady’s statement concluded with a direct question to ABC leadership: “How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?” The network has not yet responded to her demand for action.
