Three separate contamination events hit Koeberg’s Unit 2 during scheduled maintenance on June 30, July 2, and July 7, all inside the massive concrete containment building north of Cape Town. According to the National Nuclear Regulator, elevated airborne radioactive material appeared only inside the station when power to ventilation units was lost during work in maintenance tents. Regulators say the steel-reinforced containment did its job, and no radioactive material escaped into the environment or surrounding communities.

The National Nuclear Regulator classified the events below the threshold for a nuclear or radiological emergency, meaning they had no off-site safety impact. Eskom, the state power utility that runs Koeberg, reported the incidents as Level 0 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, the lowest rating with “no safety significance”. In plain English: this was an internal workplace contamination problem, not a leaking-reactor disaster, no matter what the social media memes claimed.

How Much Radiation Workers Actually Got

Radiation meters inside the work area picked up the airborne contamination, and Eskom pulled 31 workers out of the tents for checks. To prove the point and calm fears, the utility then put an extra 245 workers who had been in containment through full-body radiation counts. Eskom’s chief nuclear officer said the highest additional dose found was about 20 microsieverts, roughly 0.1 percent of the 20,000 microsievert annual limit for workers set by regulators. That is below what many people get from a simple dental X-ray.

The National Nuclear Regulator backed that picture, saying all worker contamination was lower than the radiation from a dental X-ray and confirming there was no need for iodine tablets or medical emergency measures. South Africa’s electricity and energy minister repeated that the public faced no danger and that residents around Koeberg did not see any extra radiation at all. On the numbers alone, that claim fits the data. The serious question is not “Were people near Cape Town dosed?” but “Why did the failure happen in the first place?”

The Real Weak Spot: Maintenance and Trust

Energy expert Lutuli says two of the three “incidents” were actually traced back to faulty radiation measuring devices, which means critical safety instruments were not working as they should. The third involved a burned electrical cord on a portable ventilation unit, hinting at routine maintenance problems that should not slip through at a nuclear site. Eskom itself admits that the cause of the portable ventilation unit failure is still under investigation, which means the root problem is not yet closed off.

This lands on top of a history that already makes people nervous. In 2010, 91 workers at Koeberg were contaminated with cobalt-58 dust in an internal event. In 2021, airborne iodine-131 showed up during a ventilation test and was rated as a minor anomaly by international standards. Koeberg is 42 years old and licensed to run to 60, and recent issues like an April crane malfunction feed the story that management lets small problems slide until they are forced into the open.

Nuclear Expansion Meets Media Panic

The timing could not be more political. The government is pushing plans for about 5.2 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity, and officials used the Koeberg briefings to say South Africa can safely expand nuclear power. Critics see a conflict: regulators and Eskom have every incentive to label events as “minor” to protect that agenda. At the same time, no independent third‑party environmental sampling around Cape Town has been released to double-check the claim of zero off‑site radiation, which leaves room for suspicion even if the claim is likely correct.

Sensational headlines did the rest. One outlet shouted about a “radiation leaks scare” while the regulator clearly said there was no leak at all. Social media users compared Koeberg to Chernobyl and Fukushima, even though these events never left the inside of the plant and sat at Level 0 on the safety scale. That kind of fear-driven noise helps no one. From a common-sense, conservative view, it makes more sense to demand hard data, proper maintenance records, and open audits, rather than panic over every alarm or blindly trust every press release.
